Chevening Scholarships, an initiative that awards scholarships in the UK to students from over 160 countries is now open for applications. Scholarships are for Master ‘s programs one year at various universities in the UK. The only postgraduate course that is not a master’s degree accepted by Chevening is Diplomatic Studies at the University of Oxford. Classes are scheduled to start in September/October 2023.
Benefits of Scholarships
Chevening Scholarships cover round-trip airfare to the UK, tuition fees for the chosen course, university administrative fees and also include a monthly amount of cash for the student’s personal expenses. They also include the cost of issuing a visa to the United Kingdom and a financial aid for setting up in the country. Visit the program website and learn more!
Who can apply for Chevening
Candidates from any area of expertise are the focus of the program. According to the program’s website, “there is no ideal profile of Chevening Fellows”, but successful people tend to have “ambition, leadership profile and good academic performance”. Other expected characteristics of a fellow are:
Have professional experience of at least two years (volunteer work, paid or unpaid internship also apply here);
Wanting to return to your home country after completing your studies to use the knowledge acquired in the UK;
Possess a professional record of excellence and achievements, and have the potential to become a great leader in their field;
Demonstrate that you have the necessary personal qualities to benefit from the scholarship and use it in your career;
Want to connect with other Chevening Scholars while studying in the UK and after you return to your home country;
Have a very clear idea of how the course you are going to take will benefit your country of origin.
How to Apply for Chevening Scholarships
The selection process has only two phases. First, the candidate applies through the program website, filling out an online form with the courses he would like to take. Then, submits the required documentation, which includes diplomas, academic records, acceptance letters from universities, and letters of recommendation — the deadline for submitting some of these documents extends well after the first phase of applications closes.
In the second stage, candidates are invited for an interview in English at the British Embassy or in cities that have a British consulate (here you can find a guide on the interviews). More information about the process can be seen at this link. Applications are open until November 1st.
“It is a long and bureaucratic process. It lasted almost a year, but in fact it’s the best thing I’ve done in my life”, recalls fellow Olga Correia, who studied Sports Management at Loughborough University, in the United Kingdom.
